Panasonic launches 3-D push in U.S. with Best Buy

Ahead of the launch of its 3D TVs on Wednesday in the U.S., Panasonic said it will partner with Best Buy on 3-D TV sales in the U.S., and will discount the prices of those models by close to 50%.  Panasonic said Best Buy will set up special displays promoting Panasonic's new 3D TV sets at several hundred of its biggest stores, where customers can try out the 3-D TV sets.  Best Buy will then expand the roll-out to more than 1,000 stores nationwide.  Panasonic plans to sell a 50” 3-D model for about $2,500 in the U.S.  A similar set retails for about $4,800 in Japan.  3D TV sets are a critical part of Panasonic's strategy to reverse losses at its TV operation.  The company also hopes to revive demand for its plasma displays with its 3D models.  Panasonic aims to sell one million 3-D TV sets in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011, with half of the sales being targeted for the U.S. market.  (Also reported by DJ, Reuters, Kyodo News, among others)
